Harvesting spores from kelp
Kelp spores like a mushroom. When this photo was posted on Ocean Approved’s Facebook page, the first release of spores had taken place in Ocean Approved’s nursery. The salt water in this 1 liter beaker had a concentration of 150,000 spores per milliliter. The beaker contains approximately 150,000,000 kelp spores. The spores will settle on seed string and grow into small sugar kelp plants that will be ready to transfer to the open ocean in about 32 days.
