The Maine State Department of Labor sponsors the Maine State Monitor Advocate for Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers.  The State Monitor Advocate monitors agricultural employers for compliance with the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act.

According to the Maine Department of Labor’s website, the State Monitor Advocate:

  1. -Conducts field checks in the agriculture industry.

  2. -

  3. -Provides information and advocacy for migrant and seasonal farmworkers on issues such as wages, housing, and discrimination.

-Informs farmworkers of their rights and the services available to them.

-Ensures that migrant workers seeking employment services receive the same level of service as nonagricultural or nonimmigrant customers.

Julie Rabinowitz, the spokesperson for the Maine Department of Labor, shared information about how the Department of Labor in conjunction with the Bureau of Employment Services and the Department of Workplace, Safety, and Health has conducted safety presentations for the migrant workers. She explained that such aspects of back safety and the proper ways of lifting would have been shared at the blueberry harvest workshops.

The Maine Department of Labor has compiled a Migrant Resource Guide which can be found on their website.  Copies can also be requested by contacting the Division of Migrant and Immigrant Services at 207-822-0152.

The Maine Department of Labor also offers a Hotline in Spanish and English for Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers:    1-888-307-9800
